Read MoreThe Collision was an event aiming to “bring people from all races, backgrounds and cultures together”, Sofina Begum-Pir, 16, and her team wanted to “help put an end to racial discrimination by holding an event showcasing performances, fashion shows and food from all cultures.”
“We wanted to help raise awareness against racism and show that people from all cultures and backgrounds can get together and have a good time,” says Sofina, “We are a multicultural group of teenagers who suffered racism at least once in the past,” and so she decided that a way to make a change was to bring different cultures together and to help raise awareness against racism.
The Collision helped Sofina and her team to learn more about running a professional event. Fashion designers, local businesses, photographers, and musicians all helped out to make the event happen. “We recruited talented artists from all backgrounds and ethnicities,” says Sofina, and there was a “positive vibe in the atmosphere created by so many different people being happy and enjoying themselves.”
There were times during organising the event that they ran into problems like people dropping out or letting them down. But for Sofina, “The difficulties that we faced helped me step up as a co-manager and take matters into my own hands. Organising this event gave me so much valuable experience.”
When asked whether she would run a similar event again, Sofina said, “Definitely”.
