Read MoreThe Channel is an online magazine-style show made “by young people for young people”. It was set up by Jordan Muzio, 21, as a way to give, “young people a voice”. It’s an opportunity to talk about topics like education and work, as well as things like entertainment and music.
“I started the project because I found it hard to sit and read information about things that would help me. Books, leaflets, newsletters etc. I just wanted the information to jump off the page,” says Jordan, “I wanted young people to talk to other young people through a medium that was going to reach them. I thought, ‘What if I could do this? How many other people would I help besides myself in the process?’”
It’s also an opportunity for people to get experience in putting together a full programme, they can practice “acting, presenting, lighting, filming, editing – everyone can contribute,” says Jordan.
Jordan has been working closely with a local young people’s career service called Connexions Leicestershire. This has given her the confidence to meet other young people in the community and to gain extra support with content and ideas.
The Channel’s pilot episode was a learning experience for everyone involved, and after a lot of hard work it was decided that the content wasn’t right for the programme, that it didn’t represent the voices it set out to represent, and that they would need to scrap it and start over. “It taught us a lot,” says Jordan, “and we’re really happy with the way the official first episode turned out. Each episode we’ll be learning more.”
Jordan hopes that there will be a growing interest in the online show so that people are waiting for the next episode to arrive. It is starting to spread and appear on different websites, and Jordan also wants to start getting episodes showcased in schools and getting more people interested in the opportunities that web-based programming offers.
There will be more episodes to come as well as behind-the-scenes videos made available over the coming weeks so stay updated at thechanneluk.com.
Jordan said of working with Live UnLtd, “I’ve had loads of support with the project from lots of people, and it’s been great knowing that there was extra support there from Live UnLtd. And the funding was an opportunity for me to get out there and do it rather than waiting for it to happen.”
