Mohammed Rohim (who prefers to be called Rohim) wanted to stop the segregation that he could see appearing in his area of Sandwell. He says, “there are certain sects of people in society who feel they are left out,” and for some people the answer may be to set up organisations specifically for this group, but in Rohim’s opinion, “what these organisations don’t realise is that the names of their centres segregate the community even more.”
He believed that these communities would benefit from being more integrated with one another. So he started his project to try and help make that happen. Sandwell Young Advisors hold workshops for young people from different communities and ethnic backgrounds. “The workshops have themes – leadership, communication, mentoring, coaching,” says Rohim, as well as looking at “behaviour types like assertiveness or aggressiveness”. The aim for workshops like these are, “to deliver and build long-lasting relationships with young people.”And Rohim has found organisations to participate and help with these workshops such as West Midlands Police who also helped in the Sandwell Question Time event which was held shortly after the riots took place last year. This gave all young people an opportunity to come forward and question decision makers.
Rohim’s motivation is in knowing he is making a difference, “when people tell me what I’m doing is good, that’s what inspires me.” And over 100 young people and organisations across Sandwell and now London have taken part in these workshops. He says, “I have gained a lot of skills, and have worked with young offenders and hard to reach young people.”
For the future of the project, Rohim has big plans, “I would hope to build this up by opening a training academy for young people providing them with quality skills and real-life work experience.”
Rohim said of the Live UnLtd backing: “I have been able to purchase equipment, print materials, and books to help myself and the young people progress further. I wasn’t only helped financially, though, I was given opportunities to network and share my work.”
