Recycle Yourself

FoodCycle

Yesterday we talked about recycling, repurposing and upcycling. You can read that post here.

Lots of that was about businesses or bigger projects, so here are some other ways to recycle for yourself.

Recycle Bank

Recycle Bank rewards you for recycling. It logs the amount you’re recycling as a home and then provides rewards to you for doing this.

You can also pledge to do bigger things to help the environment.

Ian Yolles also talks about social ventures in the interview. Find out more about what a social venture is here.

FoodCycle

FoodCycle is doing a form of recycling. They are are taking food that would otherwise be thrown away and providing it to other people.

Endorse Re-gifting

Re-gifting

Re-gifting

This post from Brain Pickings is trying to remove the stigma around re-gifting. Giving and receiving gifts is always nice, but sometimes the gift isn’t quite right for the person who received it. They’re not ungrateful, but it’s obvious that the gift is going to end up in the back of a cupboard, gathering dust.

Re-gifting means it gets passed on to someone who might appreciate it more. It makes less waste, and gets the gift to a good home.

Brain Pickings provides free tools to help you show people you endorse re-gifting, so that if you end up giving someone a gift they don’t really want, you don’t mind if they end up passing it on to someone who they think would appreciate it more.

Make A Difference

Nadia Issa saw a problem in her school that people weren’t being given the option to recycle because there weren’t any recycling bins around. She campaigned to get them installed in her school and succeeded.

Her local city councilor  said, “The lessons young people learn do not just happen in the classroom. By having recycling bins in our schools, students learn the importance of recycling and putting water bottles in the blue bin instead of the trash can.”

Make a clock out of old vinyl

Yesterday we talked about an artist who repurposes things to make works of art, why not try something similar yourself?

Craft projects can be a great way to stop something from ending up in landfill and be put to a another use. Here’s one example to get you thinking.

Art from rubbish

Sometimes recycling is about creating something totally different – and far more fun and engaging – than just milk bottles.

Cardiff artist Dominic Gubb creates incredibly life-like animal sculptures, mainly dogs like those above, from plastic milk bottle tops, bags, old chicken wire, and discarded furniture. You can view many of his wonderful pieces on his blog, here.
