Some people are worried that there is a split growing...
Read MoreTechnology is a huge part of all of our lives. Big surprise, yeah?! We already know this. People are finding more and more ways of using this access to technology to their advantage. But how are people finding jobs with technology?
We’ve teamed up with the Forward Foundation to give you the chance to help people find jobs with technology. Find out more about Tech2Job:
Take a look at this trailer for an upcoming documentary, The Startup Kids, about the young people starting businesses in Silicon Valley, for example.
So this is a very direct way of people finding jobs with technology – actually doing a job in technology! But that’s not all that Tech2Job is about – we want you to help people find jobs, all different kinds of jobs, through the smart use of technology. Here are some ideas to get you thinking.
We hear about this all the time – don’t leave trails of embarrassing photos of yourself dotted around Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr or wherever a future employer might stumble across it. Making these photos only visible to certain people or difficult to track down is something we need to think about. 37% of employers look up potential employees social media profiles. We’re interconnected with people, and we find jobs in many different ways now, so we have to make sure we don’t let something as simple as that be the reason you don’t get called in for an interview. You can read a post about whether we share too much online here.

But how can we turn this into a positive? If employers want to use the Internet in the search for new people to work for them, how can we help them do that? Entelo is a service trying to change the recruitment industry, helping employers find candidates through their social streams. You can take a look at a Forbes article about it here. And the Social CV is doing a similar thing.
These ideas are about seeing something that’s already happening, and trying to make it happen in a simpler and better way with technology.
How can councils and governments help young people? At Simpl Challenges, they are asking you that. They have collaborative events and workshops to try and connect people with ideas to people who could help make it happen.
At this hackathon, they asked “How can we use tech to help young people develop their futures?”
Rocket21 is a social network connecting young people and experts and helping them to think about their dreams for the future.
They’re aiming it at “Generation Z” – young people who are currently aged 9-17 – and asking them to think about what they are interested in, and to think about how they can start pursuing that interest, and who they should be talking to about it.
The saying goes, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” And sometimes that is true. Connecting with people is important when finding work, and people who are well connected are more likely to become aware of opportunities faster. So how can technology help that? Social networks are one way, and the idea of passing on relevant information to each other like with the Bump app helps with making connections and ensuring people remember you.
Has that got you thinking about using technology to find opportunities and jobs? Have you got an idea for Tech2Job? If you’re living in Camden, Islington or Hackney find out more about how you can enter the competition here.
