When people mention extreme hunger or famine, normally our minds go to Africa where certain parts of the continent still face extreme hunger on a daily basis. It means that we sometimes forget about how many people are suffering from similar situations all over the world, Foodcycle tells us, “There are 4 million people affected by food poverty in the UK.” Here are some ways that people are trying to solve the same issue closer to home.
Foodbanks are a way that people who are struggling to make ends meet can be provided with basic food requirements. With the economic situation as it is, people have required foodbanks more lately. Foodbanks rely on donated food which is then collected and distributed amongst those who need it.

A lot of food is thrown away by supermarkets – things like “wonky carrots” are not put out on the shelves because they believe that consumers don’t want them.
That’s a lot of wasted food that could be put to good use rather than being chucked away.
What do you think? Would you only buy food that looks “perfect”? Or is this a huge waste of food?

One project that is trying to combat the attitude of food being something that should be thrown away without thinking about it is FoodCycle. And Live UnLtd backed it. It’s a venture which combines young volunteers, food that would otherwise be thrown away and free kitchen space to create nutritious meals for people affected by food poverty. They say, “There are 4 million people affected by food poverty in the UK. BAPEN estimates that malnutrition costs the NHS 13 billion pounds each and every year.” Find out more about Foodcycle here.
We’re talking about extreme hunger this week at Live UnLtd. It’s a huge issue, but hopefully these stories show how people can make a difference by taking on small parts of it and trying to make a change.
Could you try and make a change in your world like Foodcycle? Tell us a little about your idea here.
