Running can change your life! That might seem like a bold claim, so don’t take our word for it. Instead, take Run Dem Crew Youngers crew leader Rianna Price’s word for it. Here Rianna tells you about her running experiences and how she created her own crew.
It’s your last chance to apply to be a part of the Run Dem Crew Youngers movement this September, so you better be quick with those applications! Head here to find out more.
In what ways would you say that running has benefited you?
Running has benefited me in many ways both physically and psychologically. I’m able to play better in my sports due to my increased endurance. It also allows me to meet new people who share the same interest and we go running together. This is a great form of motivation when you may not want to go for a run that day – I’ll end up going ’cause I don’t want to let my partner down. It has taught me a sense of team work and loyalty.
Are diet, lifestyle and sleep important when you’re running regularly?
This is extremely important as your body needs the appropriate nutrients i.e. carbohydrates for energy, and protein for bone growth. This is all important in order for your body to keep up with the physical demands of running.
Running itself needs to be done regularly for your heart to become more efficient which, in turn, will allow you to run for longer periods of time. And sleep is just as important as it enables the body to repair itself in order to prepare for another day, which enables you to reach your running potential.
How do you convince runners to join your crew?
The way you can go about finding people to join your crew is by doing your market research which will allow you to see your target audience. This gives you a head start on where and how you can alter your crew to cater to their needs.
Then you hold a taster day which is open to everyone. This can be where you give a brief summary of what the crew is about and how you see it progressing. Also, it’s important that you get their opinion and ideas, and to find out what they would like to do and get from joining this crew; their feedback is vital in order for you to get people to join and for them to maintain their interest and attendance.
What are your top tips for motivating people?
My top tips are based on my understanding that there are two different types of motivation: ‘intrinsic’, which comes from within, and ‘extrinsic’, which is external. I use them both to keep my crew motivated. Firstly they are extrinsically motivated by receiving rewards and praise when they may have achieved something – this will make them want to do it again to receive that kind of proof of achievement.
However, I also make sure that my crew is intrinsically motivated as this counts more when they are running alone. This is why I get them to believe in themselves and reward themselves when they’ve accomplished something. This type of motivation is the best as it helps a leader to not just build a crew but helps those individuals within it.
What are the benefits of running with others? How is it different from running alone?
The benefits of running with others is the increase in motivation that it can bring through others being there or the encouragement they may give. It also forces you as a runner to go for a run even on those days you may not be feeling up to it as you don’t want to let your partner down. This is different to running alone as you become your own motivator and leader over what you achieve and how, but you become a stronger runner physcologically as you’re depending more on yourself than on others.
Would you recommend becoming a crew leader?
I would definitely recommend becoming a crew leader as I believe it gives you the opportunity to help people to change their lives, adapt a healthy lifestyle, and accomplish things through running. It also helps you to be better organised, improve your time management and many other vital skills that you will require elsewhere in life.
You are given a platform to create a crew around running but using your personality to make it unique. This is the best part because it allows you to stay true to who you really are while doing what you really love.
Do you listen to music when you run solo? (If so, what music?)
When I go for a run I definitely have to listen to some music, as it takes my mind off the fact that I’m running and I begin to run to the beat of the music. This allows me to sustain my running for a longer period of time. The type of music I listen to has to have a fast tempo like R’N’B and funky house music.
Talking of music, the Run Dem Crew Youngers recently showed their musical talents by producing a mixtape for RWD online magazine to inspire their members and you.
You can listen to a track from the mixtape below and download the full thing here.
