Read MoreWe spoke to some of the crew leaders from the Run Dem Crew Youngers to find out more about them and their running crew. We’re talking about running all this week at Live UnLtd because your last chance to start a running crew with the Run Dem Crew Youngers is fast approaching!
Here’s what some of the crew leaders think of leading a running crew…
What’s your crew all about?
Giving people belief in themselves through running and having a good time whilst doing something so hard!
What’s been your biggest achievement with your crew so far?
My favourite moment so far was when we first hit 10 members attending one session, that was a great moment for me and I was buzzing!
What’s been your biggest challenge?
Keeping the momentum going, a new career has made it hard to keep up with the demands of a crew and my normal life. Things will get better though, and thankfully everyone in the crew is motivated!
Give us one piece of advice you would give to inspire another young person to set up a crew.
Do it so you’re not left wondering ‘What if?’ in a few years’ time. This experience has taken me to good places and made me meet some very interesting young people.
Where do you meet?
Prince Edward Road in Hackney Wick (we are moving to the Arch Gallery in Bethnal Green soon)
You can find Nathaniel on Twitter and Tumblr.
What’s been your biggest acheievement with your crew so far?
The biggest success has been getting consistent numbers of people attending my crew.
What’s been your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge has been getting my crew members to turn up on time.
Give us one piece of advice you would give to inspire another young person to set up a crew.
Advice for people starting a crew is to keep going when things are down and not going your way.
When and where does your crew meet?
St James’ Park, Thursdays at 5pm
What’s your crew all about?
There are 20-25 11-16 year olds who are mostly enthusiastic runners. The club is about running and having fun.
What’s been your biggest acheivement with your crew?
My biggest achievement was taking part in the mini marathon with two members of the running club – Roderick Cookie-Bresi and Sharma Shariwa. Roderick has improved as a runner and improved on his mini marathon best time.
What’s been your biggest challenge?
Starting it up, I was very nervous during my first session.
Give us one piece of advice you would give to inspire another young person to set up a crew.
Never stop, don’t stop till you reach the top.
What’s your crew all about?
Our crew is all about bridging the gap between the young and old people in our community. We are trying to get both sets of people trying to reach a common goal: fitness. Our crew acts as a catalyst in the attempt to break down the negative stigma between the old and young.
What’s been your biggest acheievement with your crew so far?
I would say our biggest so far would be the fact that we’ve got people who had never run for more than one minute, running. This is a big achievement in itself because it shows we are making a difference.
What’s been your biggest challenge?
Getting females to join our crew, as the crew is mostly male dominated. Girls, we need you to get involved!
Give us one piece of advice you would give to inspire another young person setting up a crew.
Always remind your crew to run with a smile on their faces, if they’re enjoying the run they’ll be able to give that much more, be it doing the session in a quicker time or even going for an extra mile.
When and where does your crew meet?
Ladywell, Lewisham, on Tuesdays at 7pm
