Girl Guides launch role model videos

Posted by In News.

Girlguiding UK has launched ten inspirational videos featuring successful women from a range of careers and backgrounds, to inspire girls to think more widely about their futures and show them that anything is possible.

The series of YouTube videos follows in the wake of a Girlguiding UK report that highlighted a role model deficit among females between ages 7 and 21. According to the study, there is a link between the narrow range of positive examples and lower aspirations among girls and young women.

This is one of the new videos. In it, Yewande Akinola, a renewable energy engineer with Arup, talks about her work on projects that help people in the developing world.

In another video, below, Mary Sanders talks about her job as an assistant planner in a large construction company.

Girlguiding UK has also assembled an array of famous former members – including Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds MBE and journalist Kate Silverton – to pay tribute to the skills, confidence and self-belief they gained through guiding.

High-profile businesswoman Karren Brady also supports the campaign. “Our next generation of successful and influential women need strong role models if they are to match and, hopefully, surpass the current generation,” she said.
