Do we share too much online?

Posted by In News, Safety, Technology, Videos.

We’re talking technology this week at Live UnLtd. We talked about people using apps to change their world in yesterday’s post, and we’re asking you whether you think we’re becoming addicted to technology or whether you think technology is making the world a better place in our Facebook poll.

With 75% of the world having access to mobile phones now, having constant access to internet on the go is becoming more common all the time.

Sharing things online is something we love doing, but it can also be easy to forget about how much information you’re actually sharing with people. We’ve collected together some useful things to get you thinking about the information you share online, and how you can continue to enjoy the way that the internet keeps us connected while keeping safe at the same time.

How your information is kept secure.

Have you ever wondered how your information is kept secure and how passwords work? Dr Yan explains:

CBBC have some videos to help you think about how you’re sharing information. You can find those on their Stay Safe page.

Do you know how you act online?

Here are a couple of quizzes to give you more of an idea. One from Get Safe Online and one from Newsround.

Cyber Bullying

Sharing too much information can leave people open to others taking their identity, as well as problems like cyber bullying, according to Child Line. Newsround tells you about how harmful cyber bullying can be here.

It’s not just other online users that we need to be thinking about.

Cory Doctorow asks companies like Facebook, “Why do you need to know this information?”

Do you think about what you’re sharing online?

Let us know what you think about this in our poll, and here’s another reminder about our post about apps that are trying to make things better to show you the more positive side of interacting online.

And here’s an infographic if you want to get thinking some more before you answer our poll!
