However, while the largest proportion said this was their favorite way to communicate with friends, this only equated to 49% of people. More than half prefer other forms of communication, with texting being the next favorite (33%), mostly for its speed and convenience.
Despite over half of the 13-17-year-olds in the survey visiting social networking sites everyday (68% of those asked mainly use Facebook), social networks barely register as a preffered means of communication (just 7%). Yet they are more popular than talking on the phone (4%) and Twitter (1%), the report by Common Sense Media found.
A third of young people said that using social media takes away from time they could be spending with friends, and 44% agreed “somewhat” that using social media often distracts them from the people they’re spending time with.
Interestingly, interacting online can influence what people sometimes say – a quarter admitted to having written something bad about someone online that they wouldn’t have said in person.
The Knowledge Networks survey conducted in the US asked the opinions of 1,030 13-17-year-olds in February and March 2012 for Common Sense Media.
